Kristin K. Magner is a critical care pediatric nurse practitioner affiliated with the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children’s Wisconsin. She spent 4 years as the lead advanced practice provider for the medical oncology critical care unit and developed a guideline using Dexmedetomidine for sedated lymphocyte and stem cell collection in the critical care unit. This led to first author national presentations at both Society of Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Onco-Critical Care Symposium (2021) along with abstract publications and most recently manuscript publication in Transfusion and Apheresis Science. She is now the site PI for the multi-institutional research study from PALISI entitled, “Impact of enteral nutrition on Dexmedetomidine usage in critically ill children requiring non-invasive ventilation”. Kristin’s other primary interest is using her clinical and academic experience to better understand providers’ perception of families. Her previous research focused on providers’ understanding of mothers’ perception of their child’s illness. Just as providers may not always understand a mother’s perception of her child’s illness, providers may not always recognize and understand family distress. Kristin is an original member of the multi-institutional collaborative, Milwaukee Collaborative for Resilience and Emotional Wellness Science (Milwaukee CREWS) that was founded in 2019 and is working towards better understanding stress, distress, and the psychological impact in families with pediatric patients in the PICU. Kristin has contributed to the group’s multiple national presentations and is a co-author for two manuscripts currently under peer review. She will be presenting today on her research journey including her multi-site research study involvement and recent project and publication.
