Dr.Doria Filipponi, Scientific Center of Monaco, Best Researcher Award

Dr.Doria Filipponi is a research scientist who received her master degree in molecular biology from Bologna University in Italy. Subsequently she completed a PhD program in stem cells biology from Roma University. Later, she moved to the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (Singapore) to carry out her postdoc in the laboratory of Dmitry Bulavin. During this period, Doria Filipponi made an important discovery connecting DNA-damage signaling, heterochromatin regulation and a mutation-prone environment that may enhance heterogeneity and ultimately contribute to tumor evolution. After moving to the institute for Research in Cancer and Aging in France, Doria Filipponi continued interrogating the role of DNA damage signaling in cancer. Through detailed analysis of multiple novel mouse models, Doria Filipponi uncovered an unexpected role of DNA damage-induced signaling in cancer cell reprogramming as an alternative to Cancer Stem Cell model of tumor relapse. More recently, Doria Filipponi moved to Centre Scientifique de Monaco to understand the mechanisms of stem cell plasticity in brain cancers.

Dr .Victor Desmond Mandel, Skin Cancer Unit, (IRST), (IRCCS), Italy, Best Researcher Award

Dr .Victor Desmond Mandel was graduated with honours (110/110 cum laude) in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Roma “La Sapienza” in 2010 and specialized with honours (110/110 cum laude) in Dermatology and Venereology at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in 2018.During residency he developed a high expertise in the use of non-invasive imaging tools (dermoscopy, reflectance confocal microscopy, and optical coherence tomography) for the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of various pathologies, especially melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. In this field he has published several papers, including also studies on cutaneous toxicity and prognostic implications.From 2018 to 2020 he worked at the Skin Cancer Unit of the Scientific Institute of Romagna for the Study and Treatment of Cancer in Italy, within the NET project entitled “High technology skin cancer diagnosis implemented in a research hospital network in Emilia-Romagna for early accurate skin cancer detection in a cost-saving model”. Since 2019 he has started a research collaboration with the University of Copenhagen regarding the application of non-invasive imaging techniques to nail disorders. Moreover, in the last year he has been a researcher at the University of Parma within the project “Non-invasive tools for the diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma”.In 2021 he has obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor in Dermatology.Actually, he is working for the Clinical Dermatology Department of the San Gallicano Dermatological Institute in Rome and to date he has published a chapter in two books and 70 papers.

Prof. Wei Chen, The University of Texas at Arlington, United States, Excellence in Research Awards

Wei Chen, Ph.D., graduated from the School of Earth Sciences, Jilin University, received a master degree from Central South University and Ph.D. degree from the School of Chemistry, Peking University. Then, he worked at the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a senior scientist and became a deputy director of the Materials Key Laboratory. He won the Academy of Sciences Young Scientist Award. He joined the University of Texas at Arlington as an assistant professor in 2006 and Dr. Wei Chen is now a full professor at the department of Physics, UT Arlington. He is well known for his inventions in cancer nano-targeted therapy and deep cancer photodynamic therapy. Currently he has published 295 papers and his papers have been cited more than 11500 times, and his H index is 58, including one paper with 685 citations, 13 papers with more than 200 times, 28 papers with more than 100 times. He has 20 US patents granted and he has been funded with more 30 scientific research projects with a total funding of more than 9 million U.S. dollars. Dr. Chen’s scientific research work has attracted wide attention and has been reported by the American TV program CBS. Dr. Chen received the University distinguished record of research and creative activity award in 2020. He was elected as a senior member for National Academy of Inventors, a Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials and a Vebleo Fellow in 2020 and a Sigma Xi full member in 2021.
He proposed the concept of “nanoparticle self-luminous photodynamic therapy” for the treatment of deep cancer and invented the fourth-generation photosensitizer-copper cysteine. This new type of photosensitizer can generate active oxygen in ultraviolet light, X-rays, microwaves and ultrasound for the treatment of cancer and infectious diseases. He pioneered CuS based photothermal therapy and the microwave induced oxidative therapy.
