HER2-Targeted Therapies

HER2-Targeted Therapies: HER2-positive breast cancer is characterized by the overexpression of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) protein. Adjuvant targeted therapies that specifically target HER2 have shown significant efficacy in reducing recurrence rates and improving outcomes. Examples include:

a. Trastuzumab (Herceptin): Trastuzumab is an antibody that binds to HER2, preventing the signaling pathways that promote cancer cell growth. It is commonly used in combination with chemotherapy and can be given for one year or longer.

b. Pertuzumab (Perjeta): Pertuzumab is another HER2-targeted antibody that blocks HER2 dimerization, further inhibiting cancer cell growth. It is often given in combination with trastuzumab and chemotherapy.

c. Ado-trastuzumab emtansine (Kadcyla): This is an antibody-drug conjugate that combines trastuzumab with a chemotherapy agent. It delivers the chemotherapy directly to the HER2-positive cancer cells.
